Landmark East Harlem has proposed an East-Central Harlem historic district for listing on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Essentially a Victorian-era residential community, its boundaries are Park Avenue to Lenox Avenue/Malcolm X Boulevard, 125th to 132nd Streets. It encompasses no fewer than 32 designated New York City landmarks! The earliest buildings date to the time when Harlem was a rural village not yet annexed to the City of New York; the latest are ultramodern townhouses. Other featured sites include rowhouses in the Queen Anne, Neo-Grec and Victorian Gothic styles and former church buildings that have been given new purposes. Discover and enjoy this quiet neighborhood just north of the bustle of 125th Street.
The walk will cover approximately 10 blocks in a quiet residential neighborhood. We will cross Fifth Avenue and many side streets. There will be no steps to climb nor inaccessible pathways. Public transit options are numerous, including the M1 bus on Fifth and Madison Avenues, the M7 bus on Lenox Avenue/Malcolm X Boulevard, and the numerous buses on 125th Street. There is a CitiBike station at Park Avenue and 124th Street.
