A Walk Through Harlem via NY Times by Michael Kimmelman

This article from the New York Times is a colorful jaunt through the vibrant history of Harlem. Kimmelman explores the Marcus Garvey Watch Tower, noting the recent completion of a full restoration, overseen by Landmark East Harlem board member Connie Lee. It has been given the “Excellence in Historic Structure Rehabilitation” award from the 2020 New York State Historic Preservation Awards. They wind through the brownstone-lined streets of Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes. Passing cultural behemoths like the neo-Gothic façade of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Thurgood Marshall’s and W.E.B. Du Bois’ church. Even the expansive arches of the viaduct get some love and attention. Enjoy the journey!
